Dr. Vaishak Vidyadhar, Physician with The Bangalore Hospital, Bangalore advises on some of the treatment modality available to drug addicts.

Drug addiction or substance abuse is a fairly common issue in our society. It is seen as a dependence on alcohol, drug or substance, in spite of the side effects that it may have on their physical, mental and emotional health. Most people are unable to resist the intense craving that these drugs cause. It becomes very challenging for them to give up the addiction, as the withdrawal symptoms make them feel very ill.

“An individual needs to be self-motivated to overcome his or her drug addiction. Any mode of treatment has a very low chance of being successful if the patient is not interested in getting treated. Family support is highly crucial.”

Changes in the behaviour pattern, deteriorating personal and professional life are a better indicator of drug abuse. Blood, urine and other diagnostic tests are done to confirm the presence of drugs in the body.

Most of the alcohol and drug addictions are treated with a combination of the available treatment modalities. Some of the treatment options are:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Multidimensional family therapy
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Motivational incentives
  • Inpatient or residential treatment

The successful treatment of drug abuse can include:

  • Detoxification from drugs
  • Behavioural counselling
  • Medication
  • Evaluation and treatment of co-occurring mental issues
  • Prevention of relapse

Remember, drug addiction of any form is a treatable condition. Most of the individuals can overcome their addiction if they are given appropriate support and treatment at the right time.
