What is a Keto Diet?

A keto (ketogenic) diet is a diet that is high in fat, has a fair amount of protein and is very low in carb content. It has been used as a treatment for epilepsy since the 1920s. During the keto diet, the body switches its energy source to the fat stored in the body.

The principal aim of this diet is to get the body into a state of ketosis. When the body utilizes fat for energy, ketones are formed, that’s where the diet gets its name. It has been touted to promote weight loss in a very short span of time.

How the Keto Diet Promotes Weight Loss?

  • Lowers appetite: Since the keto diet does not restrict or cut down food, it keeps you feeling full. The diet also creates positive changes in hormones like leptin (which tells the brain when enough fat is stored) and ghrelin (the hunger hormone). Healthy fats and proteins are filling and thereby reduce cravings for sweets and junk food.
  • Lesser fat storage and increased fat burning: The keto diet cuts down on carbohydrates so lesser insulin is released. When this happens, less fat is stored. Instead, existing fat stores are tapped into for energy. The diet increases the fat burning during exercise and daily activity.
  • Cutting certain foods: By limiting your carbohydrate intake, your food options are also limited. It cuts down the calories you consume on a daily basis.

Side Effects of Keto Diet

Keto diets are said to work best in the short term and can prove unhealthy too. Some experts say that it can impact your heart’s functioning and in fact make you more prone to certain cancers. However, more studies are needed to corroborate these finding.


Keto diet should be undertaken only under strict medical supervision.
