Teenage is a ‘transition phase’ where a teen undergoes a lot of physical and emotional changes and starts taking new roles and responsibilities. During this phase, they struggle to be independent and don’t like to be restricted. Opposing to this intent of freedom, if a teen is diagnosed with a disease of restrictions – ‘ diabetes’, it can put him/her into many lifestyle hassles. These include scheduling the hypoglycaemic tablets, monitoring blood glucose regularly, adhering to a strict diet and exercise. These health requirements can lead to depression which in turn can affect the status of diabetes due to lack of motivation in self-care.

Besides, newer medications available today that can lower and control the blood sugar levels as well as delay the complications of diabetes. So, instead of feeling negative, take this as an opportunity to make changes in your lifestyle.

Engaging in the same kind of physical activity (example walking) can be monotonous. Instead, choose different types of activities in a week which you enjoy the most such as cycling, playing badminton, swimming, dancing, etc. So, set a small goal every day (example 30 minutes of cycling) and be consistent rather than perfect workouts. Appreciate every little effort you make and enjoy the success. It will keep you motivated and in the long run, you will be amazed at the results. But, ensure that your efforts don’t go beyond your capacity and don’t cease to practice as soon as you find success.
# Controlling the cravings and a polite ‘NO’ to peer pressure during a party, will help you to reduce the calorie intake
Attending parties with your buddies can be tempting. At the same time, you can find it difficult to control ‘cravings’ towards the foods you relish the most. You can deal with this situation through proper planning.
Suppose your party is few days due, see that you are consistent in your diet and exercise so that the sugar levels are under control. On the day of the party, choose between sweets or boozing. In case your eye on your favourite sweet, and unable to resist it, withhold your urge to eat by ten minutes so that the crave reduces or you can divert your mind towards walking around or talking to a friend, etc. By doing this, you may land up eating less or loose interest in having sweets. Similarly, if you want to try alcohol, choose a light beer or dilute white wine with club soda; drink while eating; drink slowly and restrict to two drinks. In case your peers pressurise you, be polite enough to say ‘NO’.

Diabetes can affect anybody including our role models. You can follow the efforts our role models make to keep the sugar under control in spite of their illness and busy schedule. Further, they never let diabetes overrule their goals, ambitions and aspirations. It is for these reasons that they have become successful. Nevertheless, even healthy people are making lifestyle changes such as consuming less sugar, increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly to prevent diabetes. So, be inspired, work on your diabetes and you set an example for others who are going through the same.
Overall, diabetes is a disease which you can handle easily. All you need to do is to make an attempt and be persistent.
